FERAL HOG WORKSHOP
Helotes, Texas - A Feral Hog Workshop will be held on Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at the 4-H Building, 12132 Leslie Road, in Helotes. Attendees who complete the workshop will receive three hours of continuing education units (CEUs) which include two hours general, and one hour laws and regulations.
Registration will be at 8:30 a.m. with the first session at 9 a.m. The workshop will provide landowners and land managers an opportunity to learn more about feral hogs, including their population dynamics, regulations and laws for hunting feral swine, agricultural regulations, controlling feral hogs, trapping, transportation and holding facilities and diseases.
Texas is home to more than 2 million feral hogs, the largest feral hog population in the United States and their numbers continue to increase due to high reproductive potential and the lack of natural predators.
Feral hogs wreak havoc on property, livestock, crops and pastures across the state and frustrate landowners because of t
their destructive nature. The spread of disease by feral hogs is a major concern with the potential to jeopardize people, livestock and pets. In addition, there is a risk to the pork industry through the potential transmission of disease from feral hogs to domestic swine.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that feral hog damage to agriculture in Texas alone exceeds $52 million annually.
Sponsors include Alamo Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D), USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Texas Agrilife Extension, Texas/Mexico Border Coalition CBO and the San Antonio River Authority.
To reserve your seat for the workshop, contact Melissa Thompson at (830) 249-6163 or mail a check payable to "Alamo RC&D" to 39350 IH 10 west, Suite 7, Boerne, TX 78006. Registration is $15 in advance and $20 at the door, and includes beverages, lunch and handouts. Deadline to register in advance is August 19. If reasonable accommodations are required, please notify the Alamo RC&D office two weeks prior to the event.
For more information on the workshop and/or programs offered through the Alamo RC&D, call (830) 249-6163 or visit the Web site at www.alamorcd.org. VIEW AGENDA HERE
IMPROVING YOUR FORAGE QUALITY ON BUFFELGRASS
Rio Grande City, TX – In recent years, advances in plant and animal breeding, introduction of new products, and development of new management approaches have made it possible to increase animal performance. However, for this to be realized, there must be additional focus on forage quality.
Buffelgrass is a highly nutritious grass and is considered excellent for pasture in hot, dry areas and is valued for its production of palatable forage and intermittent grazing during drought periods especially in dry land areas. The focus of this Educational Program will highlight Buffelgrass and its establishment in Starr County.
The Cooperative Extension Program, Texas Agrilife Extension and the Texas/Mexico Border Coalition will be hosting this educational program. Dr. Wayne Hanselka, Dow Chemical Company will provide a topic on Forage Quality & Chemical Treatments, U.S. Insurance will provide a topic on Pasture & Rainfall Insurance for 2011, and the USDA Natural Conservation Service will provide topic on Increasing Productivity & New Conservation Practices. The Program will take place at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Hall in El Sauz, Texas on August 26, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. Please reply by R.S.V.P. before August 20, 2010.
For more information on this program, please contact Ronnie Zamora, Extension Agent CEP-AgNR or Omar Montemayor, County Extension Agent-Ag at the Starr County Extension Office at (956) 487-2306.
